BEIJING Jake Arrieta Jersey , July 5 (Xinhua) -- Heavy rain will hit parts of eastern and central China over the weekend, accompanied by strong winds, the National Meteorological Center (NMC) said on Saturday.
The NMC issued a yellow alert on Saturday morning, saying that eastern regions of Jiangsu and Zhejiang, Shanghai, and central parts of Anhui, Jiangxi and Hunan will see torrential rain from Saturday to Sunday, with the precipitation expected to reach up to 150 mm.
Parts of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Yunnan Province, and northeastern Heilongjiang Province would also be hit by heavy rain.
China has a four-tier color-coded warning system for severe weather, with red being the most serious, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
SHANGHAI, May 26 (Xinhua) -- From shared bicycles to bank cards and unmanned patrol vehicles, China's home-grown BeiDou navigation system has increasing numbers of applications linked to the everyday life.
Precise positioning is key to users of shared bikes, said Xu Xiangbin, deputy general manager of Techtotop Microelectronics Science and Technology Ltd, a supplier of chips for Mobike, a Chinese bike-sharing company.
The chips support the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS).
Bank cards containing such chips, to prevent them from being used by strangers, were displayed at the Eighth China Satellite Navigation Conference held in Shanghai from Tuesday to Thursday.
The solution, jointly developed by Allystar Technology and China UnionPay, can record the location information of each transaction through the high-precision positioning technology.
"The location information is very important for financial transactions, and prevention of telecommunication fraud," said Ge Chen, business development director of Allystar Technology.
BDS can also be used to carefully examine the performance of applicants in drivers' certificate tests, according to Beijing StarNeto Technology Corporation.
Using the navigation technology, the company and its partner have jointly developed an unmanned patrol vehicle with monitoring cameras in cooperation. The vehicles have been tested in residential communities in Shenzhen.
They can assist security guards in extreme weather conditions, said the company.
Industry insiders expect that BDS will have more applications in areas such as agriculture and urban underground pipeline networks.
The output value of China's satellite navigation and locating services totaled 210 billion yuan (30.5 billion U.S. dollars) in 2016, with BDS contributing more than 30 percent of that value.
The sector is forecast to have about 400 billion yuan in annual output value by 2020.

ZAGREB, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- Croatia head coach Niko Kovac advised China to invest as much in soccer as in other sports.
"I don't see any reason why the Chinese team wouldn't have a success on international level if China would invest in soccer like they do in some other sports," Kovac said.
"That's not something that can happen fast. We are talking about a 10 to 15 years process. It took Germans 10 to 12 years to make some reforms and now we can see results. They have to do the same in China. When this happens, I can tell you, we have to be beware when Chinese get going."
Same goes for the whole Asian continent, according the Croatia coach.
"I think that Asian teams have a better chance than Africans to challenge Europeans and South Americans because they have bigger population and therefore with right investment they can produce not only quality players but clubs and national teams, as well," he said.
THE HAGUE, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- Dutch daily newspaper NRC fired its China correspondent Oscar Garschagen for fabricating fake news, NRC announced on Wednesday.
"Garschagen has made serious mistakes in recent years against our journalistic rules," chief editor Peter Vandermeersch stated. "He thereby harmed the trust of the editors and the readers. Garschagen must therefore leave the newspaper."
64-year-old Garschagen was accused of making fake news by his former assistant. On Sept. 3, the assistant stated his former boss produced fake news, made up quotes, facts, names, committed plagiarism, and wrote about events he wasn't present.
Vandermeersch initially supported his correspondent, and at the same time, started an internal investigation into the issue.
The report of the investigation, which came out on Wednesday, contained 40 pages and showed in detail the several forms of fake news Garschagen committed.
"All his reports are based on extensive reporting, but in the writing it went wrong," the report concluded. "This led to mistakes, quotes attributed to the wrong person, or incorrect quotes, quotes from different persons who have been attributed to one person, details which have been intertwined, and in some cases, plagiarism."
A statement by NRC also contained a reaction by Garschagen, who claimed that one year before his retirement he wanted to show he "still could do it all". He added that he ignored all signals of a burnout and depression.
Garschagen was correspondent for NRC in China for ten years, first based in Beijing and later in Shanghai.
