LAGOS Women's James Daniels Jersey , Nov. 24 (Xinhua) -- Tensions in Nigeria, especially in the capital city of Abuja, have hiked over the past few days amid an escalating standoff between leaders of the House of Representatives and President Goodluck Jonathan.
Jonathan and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are waging a war against the parliament speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, who recently joined the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).
RACE FOR PRESIDENCY
The most violent clashes broke out Thursday when police and other state security forces barred federal lawmakers from the parliament building, dispersing them with teargas.
The speaker of the parliament recently quit the president's party and joined the main opposition party APC. Afterward, police withdrew his security personnel, triggering Thursday's standoff.
Thursday's parliament session had been convened to discuss Jonathan's request to extend the state of emergency in the country's northeast, where the armed group Boko Haram operates.
The February 2015 election is expected to be messy and closely fought. Jonathan recently announced that he will seek a second term. The APC has yet to choose a challenger.
Tambuwal was seen as a potential APC candidate in an already crowded field that includes former President Muhammadu Buhari and ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
However, Tambuwal has said he would not contest the presidential race.
The Nigerian government withdrew the security aides to Tambuwal, in an obvious response to the speaker's defection from the ruling party to the opposition, a move that has made him more popular among Nigerians but has drawn the ire of the ruling party, which has called on him to vacate his seat as the parliament speaker.
Acting inspector general of police, Suileman Abba, said Tambuwal's security aides were withdrawn since he had defected from the PDP to the APC.
IMPEACHMENT MOVE AGAINST PRESIDENT
In response to Thursday's face-off, over 100 members of the House of Representatives have launched a battle to remove the Nigerian leader. The deputies, mostly from the opposition party, were angry at the invasion of the National Assembly by police and security agents.
They alleged that Jonathan met secretly on Wednesday night with Senate Speaker David Mark and Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha on the shape of Thursday's House sitting.
Blaming Jonathan for executive recklessness, interference and abuse of police, the members opted to collate signatures for an impeachment against him, rejected the request for the extension of emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states.
While the Senate and House members fumed, the police chief justified the deployment of security forces, saying it was to defend the 1999 Constitution and prevent a breakdown of law and order.

Fallout from the Brit awards shook up the music charts on Sunday, knocking US rock band Imagine Dragons off the top spot in favor of English singersongwriter Sam Smith, data from the Official Charts company showed.
Smith won the British Breakthrough Act award at last week's ceremony, helping lift sales of his album In the Lonely Hour to No.1 from No.2.
By contrast, Smoke & Mirrors, by Imagine Dragons, last week's No.1, fell to twelfth place.
British singer Ed Sheeran, winner of British Male Solo Artist, grabbed the No.2 spot with X, while British hard rock group Royal Blood, winners of the British Group award, bagged the third slot, up 15, with their self-titled album.
In the singles chart there was no change from last week.
Ellie Goulding topped the chart for a fourth week, the Official Charts Company said, with her track "Love Me Like You Do," a song which appears in the Fifty Shades of Grey movie.
Hozier's "Take Me To Church" held steady at second, and Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk" featuring Bruno Mars, remained at third place.
